🪔 The Story Behind the Verse

Romans 3:23 is one of the clearest and most universally needed declarations in all of Scripture. It removes all illusions of human righteousness. Paul writes this within the sweeping context of Romans 1–3, where both Gentiles and Jews are shown to fall short of God’s perfect standard.

J.I. Packer once said:

“To know that we are sinners is the starting point of knowing God.”
— Knowing God (InterVarsity Press, 1973)

R.C. Sproul also reminds us:

“The gospel is only good news when we understand the bad news.”
— The Holiness of God (Ligonier Ministries)

✨ Devotional Reflection

No one is exempt. No matter how religious, moral, or sincere — all have sinned. But “come short” isn’t merely failing a test. It’s falling short of God’s radiant glory — His perfection, beauty, holiness, and presence.

This is why we need the gospel. Romans 3:23 is not the end; it’s the entry point to Romans 3:24: “Being justified freely by his grace…”

Let this truth break our pride and lead us to the cross.
